Psycho remake why

But what if the failure of the remake actually proved Van Sant was right in his criticisms of Hollywood? Of course all of these theories are very much up for debate, and it is completely understandable if you refuse to accept any sort of reappraisal of this much despised project. But what makes the Psycho remake worth remembering, above all else, is the incredible bitterness and disappointment that flows through the whole thing.

Van Sant was a rising filmmaker thrust suddenly into the light and his experiences in Hollywood clearly changed and shaped the rest of his career. This is why I like to see his Psycho remake not just as a rip-off, but also as a major middle-finger to the studio system. Why else would someone cast Vince Vaughn as a masturbating killer other than to laugh in the face of a broken system?

But Van Sant had made his mark in a big way and his Psycho remake would continue to haunt Universal for years to come. Stick it to the man, Gus. You are commenting using your WordPress. In Psycho , the hulking Vaughn's Norman is creepy from the word go, and Heche's Marion comes off as more overtly sexual and far less glamorous than Leigh's version, also coming off as less thoughtful overall.

If these were new characters in an original film, the performances might work, but considering how similar the rest of the film tries to be to Hitchcock, the differences stand out in a bad way. While it's an odd thing to say about a serial killer, one of the original Psycho 's strengths is just how likeable and sympathetic Perkins' Norman Bates comes off as.

He really doesn't seem like a bad person, and even after his murders are revealed, the fact that he's so clearly mentally damaged still makes one feel for him. This aspect was further explored in the sequels starring Perkins, which focused on Norman's attempt to beat his demons and return to an honest life. Vaughn's Norman, as mentioned above, is creepy and off-putting from the beginning, and doesn't seem like someone anyone would want to spend time with.

Add to that one of the worst changes made for the remake, that Vaughn's Norman is explicitly shown to be pleasuring himself to Marion's nude body in the shower, making him seem even slimier.

The sound of Norman Bates masturbating is not something any film fan needed. Michael Kennedy is an avid movie and TV fan that's been working for Screen Rant in various capacities since Perhaps it even is. However, both those sides are front facing. The craftiness is not just a secret between Vaughn and the audience; he shows it to other characters. Vaughn and Heche do hint at a possibility of a workable Psycho remake. If Van Sant sought to engage the movie not as some kind of film school exercise but a new version with his style and empathy, the two could have been effective players in that effort.

In the original, Marion appeared cold and distant, and the way the camera angles were far away from her adds to that. In the remake though, the closer shots give a more personal and intimate relationship between Marion and the viewer. The same can be said for Norman, especially in the scene when Marion suggests that they eat in her room as opposed to the office. In the original, this entire scene is one medium shot of the characters, but in the remake, the camera is focusing on Norman stepping closer towards the screen, giving a more intimate point of view.

The colors in Psycho are very noticeable, which was a common theme in 90s movies. Many note 90s films for having some of the most aesthetically pleasing color palettes; honorable mentions include Edward Scissorhands , Pulp Fiction , The Professional , and American Beauty , as according to Esquire.
